Interior designers are responsible for the look of interior spaces. Some specialize in certain types of design, such as homes, hotels or even the interiors of ships or airplanes. Designers work with the client, whether it is an architect who needs help with the design and placement of structural elements or a homeowner who needs someone to help pick out fabric and paints for rooms in her house.

Many schools offer programs in interior design, from art and design technical colleges to full-fledged bachelor degree programs at universities. Look for schools that are accredited by CIDA -- the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Interior designers classes include AutoCAD, principals of design and technical and graphic design processes.

According to the website PayScale, the average annual salary of interior designers was $32,372 to $49,896 in November 2010. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 19 percent growth for interior design jobs between 2008 to 2018, but they expect competition to be keen.
