Identification
-
Chinese lantern is a flowering shrub that produces lantern-shaped flowers from May to June. Each shrub has male and female parts, so multiple plants in one area are not necessary. The shrub is available in blossom colors that include white, pink, red and yellow. The Chinese lantern grows up to 9 feet in height with a branch spread of 7 to 9 feet.
Planting Preferences
-
Plant the Chinese lantern in an area that receives morning sunlight and afternoon shade. The shrub grows best in a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Chinese lanterns do not respond well during periods of drought.

Care
-
Provide supplemental water during the dry summer months when the weekly rainfall is less than an inch. You can conserve the soil moisture by applying a 3-inch layer of organic compost over the root ball area.
Warning
-
The leaves on the Chinese lantern contain a substance that may irritate the skin with direct contact. Use caution when planting the shrub to keep it away from areas frequented by pets. Do not allow pets to consume the plant leaves or stem.
