The CIMD2 Protocol
CIMD is a proprietary protocol of Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer. The acronym stands for the Computer Interface to Message Distribution protocol. CIMD2 is version 2 of this protocol.
-
Function
-
The CIMD2 protocol carries messages from computer-based applications to mobile phones. These messages are delivered to the phone as SMS (Short Message Service) text messages. SMS messages sent from mobile phones are carried over to computers by the protocol. The translation between messaging standards happens at the SMS Center.
Features
-
CIMD2 only covers the transfer of messages from computer applications to the SMS Center and from the SMS Center to computer applications. The interaction of messages between the SMS Center and the mobile phone follows the regular SMS protocols. Messages have a validity period. The SMS Center retries the transmission to the mobile phone and stores the message, resending it periodically until the validity period expires.

Messages
-
The definition of the CIMD2 protocol includes a message format that contains the actual message plus a number of parameters with associated variables. Status reports (message success feedback) are also defined in the CIMD2 protocol.
