UNIX is written in the C programming language. There are several software features are unique to, or originating with, UNIX. These include use of a command line interpreter, plain text data storage, and a kernel (the main control program). There is also the Single UNIX Specification (SUS), the official set of standards that determine the authenticity of a UNIX system as administered by the Open Group, the leading authority on UNIX. It is key that UNIX programmers are familiar with SUS.

UNIX was created in the 1960s through a collaboration between researchers at AT&T, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and General Electric and was originally called Multics. Lastly, UNIX has had such a profound impact on computing that there are many operating systems similar to it. They are collectively referred to as UNIX-like systems.
