Power Switch Failure on Laptops

Other ways to power up laptops.

When power switch failure occurs on laptops, it's not always necessary to repair or replace them. You may still have the ability to switch on the laptop computer's power using a different method.

  1. Alternate Button

    • Some laptops have more than one power switch or button. For example, many Sony Vaio computers have a switch on the side and a button at the top of the keyboard marked "P3"; both power up the laptop. Press any key you haven't tried before.

    Power Activation

    • Certain laptops offer a setting that automatically activates them when first plugged in. Unplug the laptop from its outlet, wait a minute, and plug it in again. There's a chance this will power it up, if someone previously activated the above-mentioned setting.

    Adapter Problems

    • The failure of an AC adapter can seem like a switch problem. As the RadioShack website points out, some adapters have a small light that indicates normal operation. Ensure the adapter works before spending money to replace the switch.
