Early Candy Factory

A building in the late 1800s in New York was home to Hawley & Hoops candy factory, a manufacturer of chocolate cigars and a product called A No. 1 Chocolate Cremes. The building on 10 Jersey St. in New York is now a public library.
Hershey and Chocolate Cigars

By 1895, Hershey started manufacturing chocolate cigars, and they became quite popular. According to Hershey's website, "Chocolate cigarettes and cigars, such as Hershey's Vassar Gems and Smart Set Cigarettes, were purposely marketed to women as an alternative to the tobacco variety."

Birth of a Child

Chocolate cigars also were used to celebrate the birth of a child. Even today, chocolate cigars are used to announce a birth of a baby and are available for sale at chocolate stores in many countries. They come in: "It's a Girl" and "It's a Boy" packs. Chocolate cigars also can be custom-made with wrappers reading the baby's name, date of birth and the parents' names.
Modern Usage of Chocolate Cigars

Chocolate cigars also have proved to be an excellent giveaway at events and other ceremonies such as wedding receptions, bridal showers, birthday parties and baby showers. They also are used at fundraisers, annual company meetings and client parties.
