Soil is measured by the "yard," which means the amount that would fill a cube that is one yard wide, tall and deep. This is known as a cubic yard.
36 Square Yards

A yard of soil will cover an area of 36 square yards with one inch of soil. This is equal to 324 square feet. A yard will cover 162 square feet with a two-inch depth of soil.

The recommended amount of topsoil for new and reestablished lawns is 4 to 6 inches. To cover a lawn 100 yards long by 80 yards deep with 4 inches of soil the formula is 100 x 80 x .33 (1/3 of an foot), divided by 27. The necessary topsoil would be 98 yards.
