How Difficult Is It to Get a TWIC Card?
A Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC, is required for unescorted personnel to gain access into a secured area in the transportation industry. This card is linked by fingerprint to the employee.
-
Where to Start
-
Bring along all important documents and fees. The first steps in obtaining a TWIC card are locating a registration site and collecting the necessary documentation to apply for the card. Current active driver's licenses and other licenses that are associated with your job also need to be provided. If you do not have the correct documentation, the application process cannot begin. The cost of the card may be between $107 and $159, depending on your work status.
The Process
-
Be prepared to be fingerprinted. You will need to make at least three personal visits to complete the process of applying for and being issued a TWIC card. Since this card is fingerprint-linked to your identity, the first visit will include being fingerprinted. Your picture will be taken and all application documents are signed at this time. You will need to pick the card up in person to verify your fingerprint. Within a few months after obtaining the card you will return once again to update your information.
-
Responsibility
-
Renew your TWIC annually. It is your responsibility to acquire and keep your TWIC card active. Your employer is not responsible for any fees or renewals that may be associated with the card. It is necessary to renew your card annually. However, renewal fees are not prorated. Trying to renew your card months in advance is an unnecessary cost.
