Motorcycle Helmet Technology

Riders are legally obliged to wear a helmet in the U.K.

A helmet is the single most important piece of safety equipment for a motorcycle rider. Testament to this is the requirement under U.K. law to wear one, and advances in technology are constantly improving their performance.

  1. Inner Shell

    • The inner shell is made from expanded polystyrene, the same material used to make foam coffee cups. It is made to be as dense as possible in order to absorb maximum energy and in fact, absorbs most of the impact in an accident.

    Outer Shell

    • An outer shell's primary role is to protect the inner shell. Made from either a composite or a thermoplastic, it is highly resistant to abrasion and prevents sharp objects from penetrating the inner shell and compromising its performance. It also provides a smooth surface for manufacturers to paint their helmets.

    Visor

    • Visors are made from incredibly strong polycarbonate, lower quality ones may have the potential to shatter, but more expensive helmets will use highly scratch proof, shatterproof material. They may be made in a variety of colors and either anti-fog sprays or Pinlock inner visors can be used to prevent the visor from fogging up.
