Conditions for Growing Sweet Corn

Conditions for Growing Sweet Corn thumbnail
Sweet corn thrives in warm weather and nutrient-rich soil.

Growing sweet corn requires a large plot of land, warm temperatures and rich soil. Several other factors contribute to a plentiful and long harvest, fully developed ears and natural, sweet taste. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Planting Times

    • Depending on the climate of the growing region, corn should be planted in late spring or early summer. For a longer harvest, plant early growth varieties about two weeks before main season types to stagger the crop yield.

    Soil

    • A soil fortified with vegetable-growing nutrients with lots of added nitrogen is the best for sweet corn. The soil should be loose and free of clumps to encourage fast and even growth.

    Additives

    • Mix the fortified soil with compost, well-aged manure fertilizer and a 1-inch layer of freshly mowed grass clippings. If the soil lacks nitrogen, add soybean or alfalfa meal in proportions recommended on the packaging.

    Climate

    • Corn thrives in warm temperatures with maximum exposure to the sun. If the climate is particularly dry and lacking in precipitation, water the soil regularly to keep it slightly moist.
