Using your toothbrush consistently is more important than whether it's manual or electric.

Electric and regular toothbrushes both have advantages and disadvantages. Both, when used properly and consistently, will do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Remember, other components of maintaining dental health, such as proper diet and regular checkups with a dentist, are equally important.

Cost

Obviously, the main advantage to using a manual toothbrush is that it is inexpensive. You can purchase one for a couple of dollars and easily replace it every few months or after you have been sick. Electric toothbrushes are more expensive and also have either batteries or, for the more expensive models, a charging unit that must be plugged in.

Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes

One type of electric toothbrush is known to work better than manual ones: the type in which the bristles rotate in one direction, then stop and rotate in the other direction. It removes plaque better than manual brushing, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

Considerations

Other things affect the health of your teeth more than the type of toothbrush you use. Brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, and floss every day, especially before bedtime. If you can't brush right after you eat, drink water or chew sugarless gum, according to KidsHealth. Avoid sugar and acidic foods as much as possible, and visit your dentist twice a year.
