When to Use Autoclave Molding?

Autoclave molding has long been used to shape composite materials for use in aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles. Autoclave molding is a specialized process that produces structures that are stronger and denser.

  1. Conditions

    • Composite fibers impregnated with resin are placed into the autoclave, which is basically a large oven that subjects materials to a vacuum and high pressures, as well as heat, according to "Process Modeling in Composites Manufacturing."

    Effects

    • The process inside the autoclave usually takes a number of hours, according to Engineer's Handbook. The autoclave can reach temperatures up to about 750 degrees Fahrenheit, and pressures up to 100 pounds per square inch. This serves to remove air pockets and excess resin.

    Additional Information

    • Temperature and pressure settings depend on the composite materials. Part size is limited by the size of the autoclave, which is typically made of welded steel. Some parts, for spacecraft, can be over 160 feet long.
