Motorcycle Brake Problems

Motorcycle brakes are integral to the performance of the bike, and inefficient brakes can contribute to crashes. Drum brakes, where the brake consists of an expanding shoe inside the axle, are found on older bikes and on the rear wheel of some newer bikes. Disc brakes are the most commonly used brakes for newer motorcycles.

  1. Worn Brakes

    • Before looking for more complicated problems, the brake pads (for disc brakes) or the brake shoes (for drum brakes) should be inspected for wear. Pads usually have markings on them to indicate maximum safe wear level. Worn pads or shoes should be replaced.

    Squeaky Brakes

    • Squeaky brakes occur because dust collects inside drum brakes, grit gets caught between the pad and the disc, or calipers are unlubricated. Cleaning the brakes out with a soft, dry clean cloth can help. Drum brakes can contain asbestos, so do not blow dust out in case you inhale it.

    Hydraulics

    • Brakes on newer bikes use hydraulic pressure to apply force to the brake pads. Air in the system can make brake levers soft and inefficient and should be bled out by a mechanic. Brake fluid must also be replaced regularly, as it degrades with time.
