How Does a Turbo System Work in a Car?

The power of an engine is proportionate to the amount of air and fuel it can get into the cylinders. This can be done by increasing the number of cylinders, increasing the size of the cylinders or installing a turbo system.

  1. Function

    • A turbo system increases the power and efficiency of an engine by forcing more air into the cylinders. This enables more fuel to be added in the cylinder which gives a bigger explosion and boost of speed.

    Parts

    • A turbo system consists of a turbine inlet, a compressor wheel or air pump, and bearing system. The turbine wheel is connected to the compressor wheel and both are contained in housing.

    Design

    • The turbo system is mounted onto the exhaust manifold and the exhaust of the cylinders enters the inlet which turns the turbine. This turbine causes the compressor wheel to spin which takes air from the air filter and compresses it. The compressed air flows through the charged air cooler and into the cylinder.

    Benefits

    • A turbo system is compact and a cheaper method to increase the power of an engine. This power increase will range from 30 to 40 percent.
