Copper pots need linings to be safe for cooking.

Old and antique copper cookware and utensils can add color and character to kitchen decor. However, if the copper pieces are not lined with tin or stainless steel, they are not safe to use for food preparation or storage. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Copper Risks

    • Even though humans need copper to survive, copper from cookware is toxic and can easily be absorbed into food that is exposed to its surfaces. Copper poisoning can cause nausea, achiness, fatigue, memory loss or irritability.

    Safe Copper Cookware

    • Copper conducts heat better and more evenly than any other cookware material. To make it safe, manufacturers line copper pots and pans with a layer of stainless steel or tin, leaving the copper intact on the outside of the vessels.

    Copper Care

    • To prevent modern copper cookware from becoming toxic, the metal lining should be carefully cleaned with gentle tools and materials that do not scratch or mar the surface and expose the copper underneath. If the copper is exposed, discard the pan or have it professionally relined
