California Seat Belt Information
California has a mandatory seat belt law, per vehicle code section 27315, or the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Seat belt requirements in California apply to almost every passenger or driver of a motor vehicle.

California's seat belt laws are intended to decrease deaths on highways through the use of seat belts and restraint systems.
Requirements

Per the California law, all people over the age of 16 must use seat belts when the vehicle is being operated. The driver and passengers may be cited for passengers' failure to use seat belts.

Exceptions

Passengers with a medical condition prohibiting them from complying with the seat belt law may be exempt if they have a note from their physician. Newspaper delivery people, postal workers and sanitation truck drivers are also exempt while performing their routes as long as they wear their seat belt prior to beginning the route and immediately upon completion.
