Standard Clothing Sizes Compared to Plus Sizes

Standard size and plus size clothing is not made the same. Plus size refers to clothing made for women, that usually begins with size 14 or 16, and is made larger in the bust, waist and hip areas than standard sizes.

  1. Standard vs. Plus

    • Standard size clothing can also be referred to as "regular" and, according to a Sears clothing chart, regular describes a well-proportioned 5'4" to 5'7" woman, with hips slightly larger than bust, compared to plus size clothing, which is proportioned to flatter full-figured women. Old Navy also offers plus sizes (16 to 30) which feature adjustments to sleeves, necklines and chest in tops with fuller rises and larger waist and hip measurements for pants.

All size charts are not the same

    • A comparison of three major retailer size charts --- Old Navy, Sears and JC Penney --- show similarities, but with some differences. JC Penney starts their plus size line at a 14W. In addition, there is a women's petite plus, height 4'11 to 5'3" and regular women's plus from 5'3 1/2 to 5'7". Old Navy plus sizes start at 16 to size 30 and the apparel sizing guide for women and juniors at Sears lists women's regular sizes from 0-20, then provides a plus size chart starting at size 14W and going up to a 32W (or 4X).

    Know your measurements

    • Most major retailers found online provide size charts complete with tips on how to measure and determine what size a woman wears. Knowing how to measure correctly will provide more accurate results, and will save time when shopping for the perfect outfit.
