OTR Safety

Over-the-road (OTR) truckers often are placed in more dangerous driving situations than the typical leisure driver. OTR truckers must follow certain safety guidelines to protect their safety as well as others. However, some rules vary by company and often are not enforced.

  1. Equipment

    • Before driving, truckers must wear the proper attire. Mobile Container Terminal requests that all of their drivers wear boots and safety vests. The truck also should be inspected regularly in between traveling.

    Driving Rules

    • OTR drivers are subjected to the same driving laws. Since they are driving larger vehicles, certain safety measures must be taken, such as slower speeds. Mobile Container Terminal prohibits cell phone use while driving.

    Passengers

    • A reputable company will not allow pets and unauthorized passengers to ride along with truck drivers. Such measures help prevent driver distraction, which can result in trucker injuries as well as damage to other vehicles on the road.

    Considerations

    • Some truckers follow speed limits, while others travel at potentially dangerous speeds. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration may consider a nationwide rule that requires OTR truckers to travel no more than 65 mph.
