Liquid Malt Extract Vs. Dry Malt Extract thumbnail
Malt extract can be used to make beer.

A variety of different components must come together to create a good-tasting beer. Some brewers choose to use malt extract in their creations, selecting from the dry or liquid forms. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Malt Extract

    • To make beer, brewers combine water and barley to make a sweetened liquid called wort. Malt extract is essentially a concentrated wort that eliminates the need for mashing that might be involved in the brewing process.

    Dry vs. Liquid

    • Dry malt extract is a form of liquid malt extract that has been processed so the majority of the water has been eliminated. Brewers tend to use dry malt extract more often due to the convenience and shelf life. There's less of a chance that dry malt extract will be ruined, unlike liquid malt extract, which can become contaminated even under refrigeration.

    Equivalents

    • One pound of liquid malt extract is equivalent to 0.85 lbs. of dry malt extract.
