Jade flourishes in coarse, sandy soil that provides good drainage. Choose a potting mix that contains appropriate proportions of clay, sand and silt and enhance it with a bit more sand and some crushed brick.

For optimum health and growth, place jade plants in areas that receive full sun for as much of the day as possible. If the jade is moved from a shady to a sunny spot, move it gradually to prevent sunburn to the leaves.

Depending on prevailing temperatures, jade plants normally only need watering once or twice each month during the late spring through early fall. In colder months, watering jade once a month normally suffices. Overwatering can cause root rot and death of the jade plant.
