A Description of Plantain Trees

Despite the fact that they are often referred to as trees, plantains actually grow on a plant. These delicious fruits can be thought of as miniature bananas. In many parts of the world, plantains are stewed or cooked and form a regular staple of the local diet. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • At the base of the plant, what is often mistaken for a trunk is actually a pseudo-stem comprised of leaf sheaths. From the stalk, plantains grow in clusters. When the plantains are unripe, they are green. When they are overripe, they attain a black color.

    Geography

    • Plantains were originally grown in India and southern Asia. Today, they frequently grow in tropical and subtropical environments.

    Size

    • The plant itself can grow between 20 and 25 feet tall. The leaves on a plantain can exceed 6 feet in length.
