Borax is a natural alkaline mineral used to repel insects, as well as an aid for doing your laundry. Distribute borax around any carpeted rooms in your home as you see fit, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Keep your animals out of the room while you apply, wait and cleanup. Some have reported pet's allergic reaction to borax, so vacuum and clean the area thoroughly before you allow your animal back into the room.

    Garlic and Brewer's Yeast

Some studies have shown brewer's yeast and garlic can help your pets naturally fight against fleas. The substances, when taken for an ongoing period, will change the way your pet's skin smells and tastes to a flea. These can be ground into your pets food, with the portions dependent on body weight.

    Diatomaceous Earth

    • Diatomaceous earth is a dust mineral that kills the fleas or insects that come into contact with it by sticking to their bodies and causing dehydration. The powder is made of diatoms, freshwater colonial alga and can take several days to take effect. Sprinkle the powder along your carpet where needed. When distributing the powder to a larger area of your home, you may want to wear a mask or cover your mouth and nose. This powder can also be lightly applied to your animal's fur for a more controlled dispensing of the product.

    Keep a Clean House

    • While trying your new found natural solutions to your flea problem, remember to keep a clean house. Vacuum the floors every day, as well as blankets, pillows and couches. Sheets should be washed consistently. Pay special attention to where your animal sleeps, washing the pet bed if applicable.
