GPS Training for Law Enforcement

Global positioning satellite technology has the potential to help law enforcement officials conduct more effective investigations while remaining safe. Effective training can help agencies get the most use out of their investment in GPS technologies, but cost of the training programs, and the systems themselves, is reported to be significantly prohibitive.

  1. GPS Forensics

    • Many smartphones and other mobile devices have GPS capabilities which allow users to access maps, find nearby businesses and utilize other geolocation options. Law enforcement agencies can access this information to track the movements of a suspect during a particular time frame. Training courses teach law enforcement officials how to mine devices for critical GPS information.

    Sex Offenders

    • GPS tracking devices have the potential to help law enforcement officers track criminals under house arrest and monitor the movements of people who are registered sex offenders. But the costly technology can be prohibitive. In the April 25, 2010, edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego police chief William Lansdowne said that while training his employees to use GPS monitoring devices for registered sex offenders would be easy, no law enforcement agency in the country has the resources to afford the necessary technology.

    Officer Tracking

    • On November 15, 2010, county sheriff Dave Phelan of Fairfield, Ohio, told the Columbus Dispatch that department dispatchers are able to track the position of officers in the field thanks to GPS devices. The cost of training is often an obstacle, however, that keeps other law enforcement agencies from implementing similar systems.
