Are Euro Tail Lamps Legal? thumbnail
Euro-style tail lights must be DOT approved for use within the U.S.

Euro- and JDM-style tail lamps are popular after-market automotive accessories for individuals looking to personalize their car or truck. Despite the popularity of these products, any tail lamp assembly installed in a car operated on public roads in the U.S. must comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, in addition to any applicable state laws.

  1. Federal Requirements

    • The Federal Code of Regulations (CFR) 49, Section 571.108, referred to as Standard 108, lays out all requirements for lamps and reflective devices on automobiles operating on public roads in the U.S. These requirements state that tail lights must meet visibility requirements, including the use of rear reflectors. Bulbs may only white or amber, and red bulbs are not approved.

    DOT Approval

    • A tail lamp assembly which is legal for use on U.S. public roads will have a DOT compliance number. Depending upon the make and model of vehicle, Euro-style DOT compliant tail lamp assemblies may be manufactured by after-market companies with the required DOT approval.

    Non-Compliant Tail Lamps

    • Installing Euro or other style tail lamp assemblies that do not possess DOT certification may result in ticketing by law enforcement for improper vehicle equipment. In addition, non-compliant bulb colors (such as red, green or blue) may also result in a ticket, which will require re-installation of the original tail lamp assemblies.
