What Is the Motorcycle Exhaust Law in New Hampshire?

If you're looking to ride through New Hampshire make sure your motorcycle complies with New Hampshire's noise and muffler requirements. The requirements are difficult to measure and can result in having to wait for a second police officer during a traffic stop.

  1. Noise

    • In New Hampshire the noise from motorcycle exhaust pipes must be kept under 106db. The sound is measured 20 inches from the pipe at an angle of 45 degrees.

    Muffler Requirements

    • Mufflers are required on all motorcycles, regardless of the style of the bike. They must also have baffles. Straight pipes without baffles are not allowed.

    Off-Road Differences

    • If a motorcycle is only to be used off road then the maximum sound level drops to 96 decibels although it is still measured at a distance of 20 inches. The muffler is still required for off-road motorcycles.
