American Express account protection provides relief during hardships.

The American Express Account Protector insurance provides help should you encounter a temporary medical hardship. Payment plans are available for hardships that are a result of unemployment, divorce or separation, or an unforeseen reduction of income.

  1. Terms

    • Payments continue for a period of 24 months as long as you have a qualifying disability. Payments may end prior to 24 months if you return to work, your disability ends, your balance is paid in full or a maximum of $10,000 is paid on all open American Express Accounts.

    Qualifying Disabilities

    • Qualifying disabilities include heart attack, stroke, cancer or coronary artery disease that results in bypass surgery. If you are disabled for more than 30 uninterrupted days, 5 percent of your balance, or up to $500 per month, will be paid on your account.

    Disqualifying Disabilities

    • Ineligible conditions include normal pregnancy and childbirth; deliberately inflicted injuries; attempted suicide; and injuries received during the commission of an illegal offense. Psychological, emotional, behavioral, substance abuse or any condition that required medical evaluation or treatment six months before your plan coverage commenced are not covered.
