Single Room Rent Restrictions

Save

Single room rent restrictions were created in 1996 to help younger people with housing expenses. Specific to the United Kingdom, this Housing Benefit program provides assistance for single people renting certain private accommodations.

Requirements

  • In order to qualify for single room rent restrictions, you must be under 25 years of age and single with no dependents, according to Derby City Council. You must be currently renting or planning to rent an individual room with shared use of a bathroom and kitchen.

Assistance Amounts

  • After applying for housing benefits, the Rent Officer Service will determine the average cost of renting a similar accommodation in the same area. Utilities and food costs are not taken into account. This amount will function as the maximum rent that will be covered by the Housing Benefit program, as stated on the Department of Work and Pension website.

Additional Assistance

  • If the single room rent amounts do not cover your entire housing costs, you may be eligible for Discretionary Housing Payments. These funds are limited and not available in all circumstances.

Ineligibility

  • Single room rent restrictions may not apply to you if you have a disability. You may also be ineligible if you have children living with you or if you are renting a housing association room.
