How Does a Coax Patch Panel Work?

Coax patch panels are often utilized in situations where a variety of audio and video devices need to communicate with each other. A well-maintained patch panel is an important component of cable management.

  1. Function

    • A patch panel acts as an intermediary between equipment and allows cables to be connected and disconnected from the patch panel rather than directly from the equipment. A patch panel saves devices from the wear and tear which results from cables being repeatedly connected and disconnected from a device. A patch panel also makes it easier for a technician to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment problems.

    Usage

    • A device is connected to the rear of the patch panel as if it were connecting directly into another device. The front of the panel has corresponding plugs which link directly back to the device. A patch cable is then used on the front of the patch panel to bridge the connection between devices, giving the same effect as if the devices were directly linked.

    Warning

    • A patch panel is useful only if it is well labeled and properly connected in the back. An improperly connected and labeled patch panel makes identifying the device that corresponds to each plug difficult, negating the benefits of using a patch panel.
