Identification
-
Wood stains are oil-based paints designed specifically to coat and protect wood. There are two different types: pigmented and dye. Pigmented stains are what most people think of when they picture wood stain. They are painted onto the surface of the wood, and allowed to dry. Dye-based wood stains come in powder form. You add the powder to water, and then spread it onto the wood. Both protect the exterior of the wood from the elements.

Deck Stain Ratings
-
Deck stains are rated based on how long they last before another coat must be applied. Darker, more opaque shades are rated higher, and less opaque, more transparent colors will need to reapplied more often. Flood's solid color stains will last five years, its semi-transparent stains three years, and the clear stains, two years.
