Common Varieties
-
Yew is a commonly used evergreen shrub that produces berries in both red and blue. Holly and European holly are Christmastime favorites with small red berries, and privet is as especially beautiful, only slightly poisonous shrub whose berries are so dark they oftentimes look pitch black.
Identification
-
Unlike blackberries, raspberries and similar fruits, poisonous berries are usually extremely small and spherical with no bumps or visible seeds. They vary in color but are usually found in shades of red, blue and black. Not all poisonous berries look alike, and unknown berries should not be eaten or left unattended with small children.

Uses
-
Most poisonous berry shrubs produce small, delicate blossoms before bearing fruit. These blossoms -- as well as the berries that follow -- provide a decorative touch for landscaped yards. When not in season, the full foliage of these shrubs works well in hedges and natural fences. It also provides wind barriers for smaller plants.
