When your television's DVR freezes, simple fixes can often solve the problem.

When a digital video recorder (DVR) locks up or freezes, it can be frustrating. In many cases, however, you should be able to solve the problem yourself without calling customer service.

  1. Bad Weather

    • Bad weather, such as a heavy rain storm or blizzard, can cause your DVR to lock up because it interferes with the signal. Depending on your provider, the signal can be either satellite or digital cable. In either situation, you can unplug the DVR for 15 minutes and it should reset itself, or you can wait for the inclement weather to pass.

    Obstruction

    • Sometimes tree limbs or other objects can interfere with the signal. Call a professional to remove the obstruction.

    Faulty Connection

    • One of the connections may be loose. Check the connections to your cable box or television and unplug them for five minutes, then reconnect. Also, unplug the DVR from the electrical outlet for five minutes, then reconnect.
