  1. Geography

    • Azaleas and rhododendrons are found from the arctic to the tropics, according to the American Rhododendron Society. The Pacific Coast provides an exceptionally good climate for these plants, with large-leaf varieties thriving as far as south as San Francisco.

    Types

    • Certain types of azaleas, like the maddenii, grow best in places like Southern California where frost never occurs. Azaleas often do not like strong, direct sunlight and extremely windy conditions.

    • The western azalea (R. occidentale) is actually native to the northern section of California. Some species of azalea are deciduous while others are evergreen.
