The National Association of Home Builders says two new products have improved insulated vinyl siding: An insulated foam underlayment, which fits behind the siding, and vinyl siding which is fused to the foam backing.

Siding with an insulated foam underlayment will cost roughly $181 per square foot versus $189 per for vinyl siding over a foam backing, as of 2010. The difference is attributed to labor costs, which are included in these estimates.
