Sourcesafe Alternative
Visual SourceSafe is Microsoft's version control software. It is tightly integrated with Visual Studio. There are alternatives to Visual SourceSafe, however. Some are free for individual use but others are commercial products more suited to team development.

Subversion is an open source, version-control software application. It is widely used by individuals and corporations and has quite a bit of support for end-users. Subversion works on many different operating systems including Windows, Mac, Solaris and various flavors of UNIX.
SourceGear Vault

SourceGear Vault can import SourceSafe data. It uses SQL Server as its code repository. Vault is free for individual users but you will need to purchase licenses for multiple users.

Perforce calls itself "the fastest software configuration management system." Perforce offers integration with Visual Studio and Eclipse.
Team Foundation Server

Team Foundation Server is actually Visual SourceSafe's "big brother." Microsoft developed this to replace SourceSafe. It is much more than version control, however. Team Foundation Server will manage the entire application life cycle.
SourceAnywhere

Dynamsoft's SourceAnywhere offers a standalone version and a hosted solution for source control management. Hosted solutions have limitations on storage space.
Rational ClearCase

Rational ClearCase software configuration management from IBM is a scalable solution that you can use with small teams or large distributed enterprises. ClearCase supports multiple operating system platforms and integrates with the leading integrated development environments, according to IBM.
