Plants and rocks protect the topsoil.

Never leave bare soil. Seed an area with grass. When a summer garden is finished, cover it with compost or mulch. Plant a winter cover crop. Plant shrubs and trees. Roots of all vegetation keep the topsoil intact.

    Cover the Soil

    • If there are areas you do not want to plant, cover them with landscaping fabric and stones. This will prevent wind from blowing away the soil.

    Stabilize Slopes

    • Top soil will run off from a steep slope during heavy rain. A terraced system reduces this run off.
