Do Black Roses Exist?

Black roses have been the stuff of legends for generations. Even though black roses are not naturally occurring, crossbreeding has allowed modern-day scientists to create a hybrid rose that produces black blossoms. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Substitutes

    • Black roses aren't widely available for home growth, but gardeners may mimic the look of black roses by planting one of several breeds of roses that closely resemble them. These substitute rose bushes are such a dark shade of red that they appear black in most lighting.

    Artificial

    • Many artificial types of black roses are made, and may be found in craft or flower stores, especially around Halloween. These flowers may be made from almost any material---silk, feathers and polyester being among the most common. Real roses can also be dyed to appear black, and are available for purchase online and in some flower shops.

    In Popular Culture

    • Black roses are used symbolically in many books, movies and even urban legends. They usually represent dark magic, sadness, anger and occasionally beauty. Over a dozen artists, including Trey Songz, have used the imagery of black roses in music videos, album covers and band logos.
