Role of a Police Investigator

A police investigator is a police officer who investigates criminal violations, criminal activities or criminal offenses. A police investigator also identifies criminals and helps in their prosecution.

  1. Duties

    • A police inspector follows up on case assignments, and this includes interviewing victims and getting investigative leads. She also processes crime scenes, shooting photographs and collecting evidence. Other police investigator duties include identifying and arresting suspects, and recovering stolen property.

    Knowledge

    • This role calls for a knowledge of patrol work, basic criminal investigation and felony investigations. A familiarity with the laws relating to areas of criminal activity, such as murder and narcotics, is also necessary. A police investigator should know how to collect evidence, and should be familiar with police equipment.

    Capabilities

    • A police investigator should be able to interact with the public and other police employees. He should maintain his physical condition so as to perform his duties. He should also be able to work at different times, depending on the needs of an investigation.
