Socket 939 Vs. Socket 775

The central processing unit of a computer sits in a socket, or mounting location, on the motherboard. There are many types of CPU sockets, including socket 939 and socket 775.

  1. Manufacturers

    • The two largest manufacturers of CPUs are AMD and Intel. Socket 939 is an AMD socket type; it will not accommodate non-AMD processors. Socket 775 is an Intel socket type, and is only compatible with Intel processors.

    Pins

    • Socket 939 uses 939 pins to transfer data to and from the CPU. Socket 775 has 775 contacts, which touch the CPU pins and thereby transfer data.

    Supported CPU Speeds

    • Socket 939 can fit chips with speeds of 1.8 to 3 GHz. Socket 775 can fit chips with speeds of 1.8 to 3.8 GHz.

    Processors

    • Socket 939 supports the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, Opteron and Dual-Core Opteron processors, among others. Socket 775 supports the Celeron 400 series, the Core 2 Duo, Quad and Extreme and the Xeon 300 series, among others.
