Information on the Alabama GED Test

Alabama recognizes the GED Test as equivalent to a High School diploma

Alabama administers the GED (General Educational Development) Test for the American Council on Education in several locations. The fee for first-time test-takers is $50, although you may retake any one of the five sections of the test for $10 each.

Preparing for the GED

Students planning to take the GED Test may enroll in one of 26 adult education locations throughout the state of Alabama (see Resources). They do not have to reside in the same area as the program's service area. These preparation classes are free of charge.

Taking the GED

Alabama maintains 48 official GED Testing Centers throughout the state (see Resources). Students may not take the GED test online. Students must bring acceptable identification to the test, including their Social Security number or U.S. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and a government-issued photo identification such as a current drivers license.

Transcript Requests

Test takers will receive a copy of the results of their GED test in the mail. Duplicate transcripts are available for $10 (see Resources).
