About Charter
-
Charter, one of the largest Internet service providers in the United States --- others include Comcast, Verizon and Cox Communications --- distributes Internet through a cable modem, which customers connect to a cable source. Those wanting to use Charter Internet wirelessly on their laptops can connect the modem to a wireless router.
Reasons for Malfunction
-
An outdated modem is one of the most common causes of problems. Charter upgrades its services every few years, and failure to upgrade the modem accordingly will result in a spotty Internet connection. Faulty wiring or a broken cable cord can also cause modem problems.

Solution
-
Unplugging a modem and replugging it at least 30 seconds later is the easiest way to get it to resume working. Modems that continue to malfunction should be brought to the attention of Charter customer service. A customer service agent will check the person's connection, diagnose a problem and in some cases send a technician to fix it.
