What Can I Seal Formica With Before I Paint it?

Laminate countertops can be easily updated with paint.

Formica is a brand name for laminate. Painting can be an easy way to update old laminate countertops. The countertops need to be properly prepared before they are painted and then a sealant must be applied over the paint.

Prepare the Countertops

Start by cleaning the countertops. Sand them down with fine sand paper. Fill in any holes or cracks in the laminate with a wood filler product.

Prime and Paint

Apply two thin coats of an acrylic flat-bond primer. Follow with two coats of semi-gloss paint.

Seal the Countertops

Use two coats of semi-gloss clear acrylic to seal the countertops. Allow two weeks for the countertops to fully set. Never use abrasive cleaners on painted laminate countertops.
