Plant a portable garden in a wheelbarrow.

A wheelbarrow is an excellent base to plant a small garden. As a planter, a wheelbarrow has several advantages over conventional metal planters, primarily size and mobility for seeking sunny spots, and you can use it in a couple of different ways. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Large Planter

    • The most straightforward method is to fill your wheelbarrow with a lightweight soil and plant your flowers. Taller plants should be placed closer to the back of the wheelbarrow where the soil is deeper and will allow the roots to grow further down.

    Flower Pot Holder

    • Arrange a series of potted plants inside the wheelbarrow. This you can easily rearrange or even replace the plants in your garden as you see fit.

    Plant Size

    • When planting a garden in a wheelbarrow, limit the plant size to what will reasonably fit inside. For example, flowers that grow up to 12 inches tall will fit comfortably, whereas a 6-foot sunflower stalk would obviously not.
