What Is a Sweet Olive Tree?

The sweet olive tree, also known as the fragrant olive or sweet tea tree, produces fragrant flowers and is a suitable choice for an inside or outdoor container tree. These flowers are often added to tea. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Sweet olive trees typically grow 10 to 20 feet tall with an 8- to 12-foot spread. Leaves are dark green and leathery in texture. They are small and grow opposite each other on the stem. The tree produces small flowers that grow in clusters. The tree blooms in the spring and sporadically until fall.

    Planting Considerations

    • A sweet olive tree grows best in USDA hardiness zones 7 through 9. It is often used as a hedge plant and is sometimes grown as a houseplant. These trees can be pruned as desired. They grow at a moderate rate.

    Habitat

    • Sweet olive trees are drought tolerant and prefer sun to partial shade. They should be planted in acidic soil that is moist and well drained.
