OSHA's Welding Regulations

OSHA's Welding Regulations thumbnail
Welding is a dangerous job, and OSHA regulates safety standards.

Welding improperly can cause severe injury or death. To prevent unsafe situations, OSHA has set many regulations for welders, but basic standards apply in every situation.

  1. Clothing

    • OSHA regulations require the person who is welding to be protected. The face gear that is required depends on the type of welder being used. Protective gloves should be used to prevent the person welding from burning their hands. Jumpsuits are used to prevent clothing from catching on fire.

    Floors

    • The floor area below a welder should be swept so it is clear of any combustible debris. If the floor itself is combustible, it should be wet down. When the floor is wet, a protective layer should be used to protect the person welding from being electrocuted.

    Emergency

    • Welders should have protective items nearby in case of fire. These might include fire extinguishers, water or sand. If the welding area could be easily ignited, a barrier or a fire watcher might be needed.
