The Airman Battle Uniform Policy

The Airman Battle Uniform was introduced in 2007 to provide members of the U.S. Air Force with an updated, easier-to-maintain uniform. The ABU is being phased into use until it becomes mandatory in October 2011, according to the U.S. Cavalry.

  1. Clothing

    • Desert tan crew neck T-shirts are the only T-shirts permitted to be worn with the ABU, along with desert sand-colored turtleneck sweaters for periods of cold weather. The uniform cannot be mixed with other camouflage patterns of Air Force uniforms.

    Boots

    • Members of the U.S. Air Force are not permitted to wear black boots with the ABU. Until completely phased in with sage green boots in 2011, Air Force issue tan boots can be worn. Baseball caps are not permitted with the ABU.

    Cost

    • The ABU costs more than the uniform it replaces, therefore enlisted members of the Air Force receive an increase in uniform allowance to reflect the increase. The ABU is designed to be washed and worn, with dry pressing and dry cleaning prohibited to maintain the 12-month lifespan of the uniform.
