A V-belt, also called a vee belt or wedge rope, is the belt that provides power to the transmission. Its V shape tracks inside a groove in the engine's pulley, securing it in place. This type of belt requires less width and tension than flat belts, making them more effective.
Alignment

Vee belts must be aligned with their associated components in order to be effective. You can measure your belt's alignment with a straightedge, like a ruler or a level. For this type of belt, more than 1/2 of a degree of misalignment, or about 1/10 inch per foot of distance traveled, is too much.

More than 1/2 of a degree of misalignment on V-belts can lead very quickly to belt failure. Depending on the severity, misalignment reduces the performance of your belt by increasing both wear fatigue, and can destroy the belt in just days.
