Sheepskin car seat covers have certain drawbacks.

Car seat covers made from sheepskin have many advantages. They are good insulators, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They are comfortable and provide an extra layer of support while driving. They also look good. Nevertheless, they have certain drawbacks.

  1. Cleaning and Maintenance

    • Cleaning sheepskin car seat covers is expensive and time consuming. Spot cleaning is an option, with water and a mild soap, but only for light stains. Maintenance requires using a soft bristle brush periodically to remove dirt.

Washing them incorrectly could ruin them, as it can remove the skin's natural oils, dry out the backs of the skins, tear away strips or could even cause shredding. Washing your sheepskin covers with specially made shampoos and then air drying them is time consuming. Dry cleaning is the best option, but is expensive.

    Cost

    • Custom-made sheepskin car seat covers are expensive, with some costing upwards of $500 per pair. There are those that cost closer to $150 per pair, however, these are standard-sized, not custom fitted. At either price, sheepskin car seat covers are a substantial investment.

    Side Airbags

    • Certain manufacturers require that sheepskin car seat covers be altered in order to accommodate side airbags that come standard in certain vehicles, including the Volkswagen Beetle, Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Volvos.
