Can a LPN Administer a PPD?

Can a LPN Administer a PPD? thumbnail
PPD refers to purified protein derivatives injected into the skin.

A licensed practical nurse or LPN performs nursing duties under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse RN. A PPD is a skin test used to diagnose tuberculosis. Administration and assessment conditions regarding PPD tests fall under the jurisdiction of state laws.

  1. Facts

    • Many state and medical facility policies allow a trained LPN to administer PPD skin tests. The procedure is done under the direct orders or supervision of a physician or RN.

    Considerations

    • Regulations for LPN observation and assessment of PPD test findings differ by state as well. In New York, trained LPNs may administer, read and document but not assess or diagnose results. According to the North Carolina Board of Nursing and Iowa Board of Nursing, it is within a trained LPN's scope of practice to administer and assess results.

    Other Requirements

    • Facility and state policies may require PPD training and certification beyond LPN licensure before an LPN is allowed to administer, read or assess a tuberculosis test.
