The Alaska ferry system is officially called the Alaska Marine Highway. Ferry cruises can be an economical alternative to visiting many of Alaska's coastal communities. It is a good idea to plan ahead and make reservations because ferry cruises sell out early.

The ferries have no onboard doctor and can offer only first aid services while on board. Alaska ferry cruises have strict rules regarding smoking. Smoking is restricted to the outside decks and posted areas only. Any person under the influence of drugs or alcohol may be denied boarding as well as any person demonstrating behavior that is dangerous or objectionable to any other passengers.

Passengers without vehicles are required to check in at least one hour prior to departure. Alaska ferry cruises require reserved vehicles to arrive at least two hours before departure to ensure vehicles can be loaded onto the vessel in reserved lanes. If you do not show up by the loading departure time, the reserved spot may be given to someone on the stand-by list.

U.S. residents who are not citizens should carry their Alien Registration Card. Some of the Alaska ferry cruise routes enter Canada, and all passengers need to know what documentation is required on these routes. Native-born citizens of the United States should carry their birth certificates as well as a photo ID or passport.
