Many artists have chosen to take their art to the street. They use sidewalk chalk and pastels to create beautiful masterpieces, some with three-dimensional effects.

History

Street painters have been beautifying the public streets since the 16th Century in Europe. Street painters in Italy often painted pictures of the Madonna, hence their title "madonnari."

Several talented street artists work with chalk, including Kurt Wenner, Julian Beever and Edgar Mueller to name just a few.

Festivals

Chalk festivals take place everywhere from Pasadena to New York. At these festivals, artists are able to display their work.
